Macular Pigment Testing: It is becoming ever more apparent that a number of risk factors are involved in the development of macular degeneration. One of these risk factors appears to be the amount of pigment in the macular area of the retina. The level of pigment that naturally occurs in the macula tends to decrease with age and recent studies show that higher levels may be protective for developing macular disease and/or reducing the severity of the disease. In addition, certain nutrients such as zeaxanthin and lutein have been shown to increase the pigment in the macula and, though available in some foods we eat, they tend to be deficient in most peoples' diets.

As pat of our eye examination we test all patients over the age of 35 for macular pigment level. If the level is low, or if you have other risk factors for developing macular degeneration, there are vitamin supplements that we might recommend for you. If you are concerned about macular degeneration or have further questions, please contact our office.
